The Ultimate Guide to Smith Broughton Auctioneers’ Machinery & Truck Auctions in Port Hedland

Smith Broughton Auctioneers is a renowned Western Australian business specialising in remarketing used mining, construction, transport, agricultural and industrial equipment assets. We hold about 120 machinery & truck auctions online all year round, giving you an abundance of equipment options to choose from.

So, how did Smith Broughton Auctioneers come to be?

Exploring Our Rich Heritage

Smith Broughton Auctioneers' roots can be traced back to 1977 when Max Broughton founded Broughton & Co in the Perth suburb of Bayswater. The company expanded in 1981, focusing on asset valuation and sales for the mining and resources sectors. During this period, Darren Smith joined as a trainee valuer. The company’s growth then extended into the finance and government sectors.

In 1991, Darren Smith left to establish DW Smith & Sons Auctioneers & Valuers, specialising in the mining and resources niche. In 1997, Darren and Max reunited, merging their companies to form the Smith Broughton Auctioneers, which operates from their Midland facility with a branch in Port Hedland and continues to thrive.

Today, the company remains in the hands of Darren Smith and Max Broughton, with Darren serving as the Managing Director.

Smith Broughton Auctioneers’ Selling Guide

Selling with Smith Broughton Auctioneers couldn’t be easier. Here’s how:

1. Initial Contact

To start the process, please get in touch with Smith Broughton Auctioneers by calling us on 9374 9222, 9520 8311, or 0438 115 863 or by completing the "Sell" form available under the 'Sell' tab. Please have the following information ready:

  • Asset you would like to sell
  • Information about the asset, including year, make, model and registration (if applicable)
  • Images of the item (if available)
  • Contact details

2. Delivery

A sales representative from SBA will be in touch to help you coordinate the transportation of the consignment to our yard or, if preferred, make on-site arrangements. It is important to note that the seller is responsible for organising and overseeing the transport.

3. Contract

After discussions with our sales representative, a crucial step of the process involves signing a contract that outlines and agrees to the terms and conditions of the sale. During these discussions, our sales representative will elaborate on the various selling options available, including:

  • Reserved
  • Unreserved
  • Guaranteed Minimum Returns (GMR)
  • Expression of Interest (EOI)

4. Consignments

The machinery goes through a documentation process. It is photographed, described in detail, and systematically categorised to provide information for potential buyers. Each piece of machinery is given a unique consignment number and allocated to an upcoming auction.

5. Sale Period

Prospective buyers can participate in the auction process by registering and submitting competitive bids for the machinery during the designated auction period. Sellers also have an alternative avenue to consider offers through an Expression of Interest (EOI) within an agreed-upon timeframe.

6. Sold

After the auction ends, successful buyers start the required procedures for transferring and transporting the purchased machinery. Payments are processed, and buyers must fulfil their financial obligations within the specified time frame. This phase marks the successful transition of ownership and completion of financial transactions.

7. Paying out Encumbrances

At Smith Broughton Auctioneers, we prioritise transparency and accountability. When an asset is under finance or encumbrance and requires a payout, we request a payout letter to ensure a smooth ownership transition. We promptly fulfil financial requirements to ensure purchasers experience a seamless transfer of ownership.
